Frequently Asked Dental Questions

Asking questions and getting answers is an essential part of maintaining oral health. Here are answers to some of the most common questions we get asked at Destination Dental!

Visiting our dentist in SE Calgary on a regular basis will not only keep your mouth and teeth healthy but will also ensure that your entire body remains in good health.

Dental care is important because it:

  • Protects against gum disease
  • Prevents halitosis (bad breath)
  • Maintains your beautiful smile
  • Strengthens your teeth
  • Reduces staining
  • Prevents tooth decay
  • Prevents bone loss

Even if your teeth feel fine, it is still important to visit our dental clinic in Inglewood at least once every six months because issues can exist without you realizing it. We offer many treatment choices that can help you maintain and improve your healthy smile through preventative oral care.

A cavity is a small hole that is caused by tooth decay and forms on the inside of your tooth.

Cavities form when a buildup of plaque on the outside of the tooth combines with the sugars and starches in the food you ingest. This creates an acid that eats away at the protective enamel of your tooth.

If you leave a cavity untreated, it can lead to more serious oral health problems. Remember to always brush your teeth twice a day and floss at least once a day to prevent cavities.

Otherwise known as periodontal disease, gum disease is mainly caused by a buildup of plaque and bacteria that has not been treated early on. Some common signs of gum disease include:

  • Chronic bad breath
  • Extreme tooth sensitivity
  • Red, irritated, inflamed, or bleeding gums
  • Receding gums
  • Loose teeth
  • Abscessed teeth

It is important to always brush your teeth morning and night and floss at least once a day. Ensure that the toothpaste you use contains fluoride, and speak to our dentist near you if you need a fluoride rinse. When brushing your teeth, don’t forget to brush your tongue.

You should also avoid foods containing high sugar levels because this increases the number of bacteria that grow in your mouth and increases your risk of cavities.

If you are a smoker, quit! Tobacco can stain your teeth, cause gum disease and lead to oral cancer.

Finally, make sure to schedule a routine checkup at our dental clinic in SE Calgary at least once every six months.
